Aladdin and his long-suffering mum, Widow Twankey, have fallen on hard times. At their laundry, the spin drier has stopped working. So has Aladdin. He’s super lazy – which is like normal lazy but wearing a cape.

So when the mysterious Abanazar appears and promises untold wealth if he will just fetch a lamp from a cave, Aladdin jumps at the opportunity. (Well maybe not ‘jumps.’)

And so begins an adventure involving magic lamps, genies, flying carpets and a chance encounter with the Princess Jasmine. How will it all end?

As part of their continued commitment to mentor and develop artists in Limerick, Lime Tree Theatre is delighted to present their second professional Panto this Christmas. Limerick actors Aidan Crowe and Jessica Bray return to join the stellar creative team from last year; Mike Finn (Writer), Michael Finneran (Director), Noel Lennon (Music Director), Pamela McGlynn (Choreographer), and joined by Jean McGlynn (Production Designer).

The show will run for 34 performances from December 8th 2023 – January 7th 2024. Aladdin and his Magic Lamp will once again feature an ensemble of young local performers, who will perform alongside the professional cast. The long-term plan to keep local professional artists and supporting art-workers employed in the city will ensure a vibrant arts sector in Limerick for the next 10 years.

Panto Playwright, Mike Finn, said:
The story of Aladdin and His Magic Lamp has been lighting up pages and stages for ages. Some time in the late 1960s I was taken, on a cold January evening, to the Crescent Theatre (or was it the City Theatre?) to my first pantomime. The lights went down, the band struck up and when the curtains opened we were in a (sort of) China. There were men in dresses, colourful sets, extravagant costumes, a comic laundry, giant knickers, dancing girls, custard pies, people falling over, flying carpets, mysterious caves and adults nudging, winking and sniggering at things I didn’t understand. I was mesmerised by the sophisticated stupidity of it all and I’ve been trapped, like Aladdin in his cave, ever since.”
